Nestled onto Baymeadows road right off a busy area of Florida State road 13 lies this hip, family owned restaurant called 1928 Cuban Bistro. Walking into the restaurant my eyes were instantly greeted with the crisp white decor and pops of pastel colors. A short line of tired, corporate dressed customers waited for their to-go orders while the remnants of fresh bread filled the air.
A man and his wife ordered with their masks on to eat outside, while others stayed inside the tranquil looking bistro. In the corner of the restaurant was balloons with a one year anniversary sign and framed vintage Cuban pictures.
The family owned eatery was inspired by the owners grandparent's who escaped Communism in Cuba to move to the United States. The restaurant is dedicated to her grandparents and inspired by Cuban dishes that bring all people together. You can either gather with family over a sandwich or mingle with a Cuban coffee with friends.
Upon sitting down I was called my order of sandwiches which were the Cuban and Medianoche that were pristinely show off in gold baskets. My favorite, the Medianoche, consisted of warm roasted pork layered with ham and melted Swiss cheese encasing it. There also was two sweet pickles and mustard tucked into a sweet Cuban bread.
The other sandwich I tried, the Cuban, was delicately sliced where it rested in the middle of the gold accented tray. It held a whole boatload of roasted pork, Swiss cheese, artfully layered ham, crunchy dill pickles, and mustard sauce. The sandwhich consisted of a non-sweet bread unlike it's menu neighbor. If you like a big meaty helping this is the sandwich for you.
Along with my meal I decided to try the chai tea latte with almond milk. The big cup of joe was presented in a painted white glass cup with the lingering scent of fresh cocoa beans. The two espresso shots that stayed in the bottom till slurped up devoured the whole so-called chai tea. It tasted more espresso based than tea. Although I am not a coffee drinker it was undoubtedly the best "coffee" I have ever had the pleasure to sip.
One of the customers who loved her meal, Jenn Jelinek, said,"I thought it would just be a bistro with a Cuban sandwich on the menu, but it was barely in English and was very root driven. My favorite sandwhich was the Medianoche and it had a good flavor of sauce on it. It was way more authentic that I though it would ever be."
With little to no room left in my stomach I decided to try some of the homemade pastries that the cashier raved about. I decided to try the Pastelito De Guayaba y Queso and the Pastelito De Queso. Both pastries were neatly wrapped in a brown box with paper on the bottom to keep them looking picture picture. While eating I grew at ease as the buzzing of the espresso machine slowed and Spanish music played in the background making me feel like I was actually in Cuba.
These pastries were made out of both creme cheese, but one with fresh guava. The Pastelito de Guayaba y Queso are generally egg washed on top to get that crisp light and fluffy crunch. The Pastelito De Queso was by far my second favorite thing I had tried on the menu which are really just creme cheese pastries. The creme cheese was gracefully snugged inside a sweet, sugar glazed, flour pastry that gave me the urge to buy five more.
A customer who gave his opinion on his meal, Bryan Jelinek, said, "It was okay. It was nothing to write home about. I think I could make it at home."
If your feeling adventurous and want to travel somewhere new in town this is the closest thing to the Cuban atmosphere your gonna get. This Instagram worthy bistro will not only give you cute pictures, but also give you a taste of authentic Cuban ingredients. This restaurant is nothing short of affordable food and homemade cuisine.
